Artist Statement of Intent

My work reflects a journey through phases of life. This journey is my collective experiences that happen every single moment of the day. Through these experiences, I seek to culminate an intuitive communion with the natural world, which is the very essence of my work.

I enjoy working in series and on small scale as the subtle changes in each painting could potentially be developed into a myriad of themes, and hence, totally different. Just like life, it comes with many surprises and unexpected challenges as we continue to make our existence on this earth we called home.

‘The Essence of Being’

My subject of interest on "The Essence of Being" is illustrated in these series of paintings. This personal on-going study involves themes of the private self, public and social self, and the spiritual self, and its relation to the social, physical and natural environment.

"Rhythm of Life " features elements of relationships that add richness to one's existence. Relationship may not necessarily be between people, it could be attachment to things that are dear and of sentimental value. The richness of multiple layers of interaction are displayed in the colours, textures and shapes used.

"The Dreamcatcher" series is inspired by the beautiful stories in American Indian mythology, The Dreamcatcher. It is believed, when the Dreamcatcher is placed near one's bed, good dreams travel through the web of the Dreamcatcher into the life of the bearer, while bad dreams become hopelessly entangled in the web where they perish each morning at the first light of dawn.

In the same way, "The Dreamcatcher" series show the various mood of the dream through colours admist nets of lace and crossed lines. More units of dreams can be added onto the bunch as life goes by, thus making up a whole set of hopes and aspirations, eventually becoming visible and prominent.

"Fruits of the Spirit" portrays the core of the heart which cradles the fruits of the spirit such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

It is with the realization that each individual nurtures each fruit at their own pace into eventually equip themselves with all the fruits.

Ordinary objects
Ordinary existence
Extra-ordinary valuables

Beyond the appearance of these ordinary objects, lay the marks of people & events that came into my path as I travel along this journey of life.

On any night, when you look up in the sky, what do you see? Do you always see stars in the sky? Do you always stare into a cloudy sky?

The dark night possess a mysterious beauty. Many times when you look up in the sky, you do not necessarily see all of night’s gift but that does not mean it is not there. Deep down in the root of our soul, we know that there are millions of living stars beyond this we call the ‘sky’. Just like life itself, no matter how ordinary our lives are, there are always hopes and dreams that are waiting to be revealed.

This is the driving force for our existence. Life without hopes and dreams to me is no life at all. Just remember, the ‘sky’ is the limit.

There are voices which we hear in solitude, but they grow faint and inaudible as we enter into the world.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Voices, everyday we hear voices. No matter how ordinary one’s life is, we hear voices everyday. We hear different sets of voices when we are in solitude. We hear other different sets of voices when we are in the world of reality.

Solitude cracks open the door that separates our two worlds; the life we lead today and the life we yearn for so deeply. Many a time, we find ourselves moving to the rhythm of others more than we would like, and that only in moments of solitude we are able to move towards our own rhythm.
